Zibi Smoke Co. was founded by a member of the Algonquin Anishinabeg nation and we strive to uphold our Indigenous roots in our everyday business dealings. Upholding fairness, transparency, respect and quality in all that we do.
The word “Ottawa” means “to trade” and “Zibi” means “river” in the Algonquin Anishinabeg language. Ottawa with the Ottawa river flowing through, the area is an ancient Indigenous trading hub and unceded Algonquin territory. Unceded, meaning the land was never surrendered to the Crown or otherwise had treaty agreements written so the Indigenous could be compensated adequately.
We choose to trade on our unceded Algonquin territory and operate tax-free as a statement of our Indigenous Sovereignty. As everything we sell is sourced from the reserve from Indigenous business owners, we see no reason to charge taxes to our customers on the products we sell. It is our constitutionally granted right as an Indigenous business to free and unobstructed trade with all of His Majesty’s subjects (Link: justice.gc.ca See sections 25 & 26).
